Ayat al-Kursi (protection)

Morning & Evening

اللَّهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّومُ ۚ لَا تَأْخُذُهُ سِنَةٌ وَلَا نَوْمٌ ۚ لَهُ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الْأَرْضِ

Allahu la ilaha illa Huwa, Al-Hayyul-Qayyum. La ta'khudhuhu sinatun wa la nawm. Lahu ma fis-samawati wa ma fil-ard.

Allah — there is no god worthy of worship except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all. Neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on the earth.

Master supplication for forgiveness (Sayyid al-Istighfar)

Morning & Evening

اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ رَبِّي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ، خَلَقْتَنِي وَأَنَا عَبْدُكَ، وَأَنَا عَلَى عَهْدِكَ وَوَعْدِكَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُ

Allahumma anta Rabbi la ilaha illa anta, khalaqtani wa ana 'abduka, wa ana 'ala 'ahdika wa wa'dika mastata'tu.

O Allah, You are my Lord. There is no god but You. You created me and I am Your servant, and I keep my covenant and promise to You as much as I can.

Sahih al-Bukhari 6306

Upon reaching the morning

أَصْبَحْنَا وَأَصْبَحَ الْمُلْكُ لِلَّهِ، وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ

Asbahna wa asbahal-mulku lillah, walhamdu lillah, la ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah.

We have entered the morning and the whole kingdom belongs to Allah. All praise is for Allah. None has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone, without any partner.

Upon reaching the evening

أَمْسَيْنَا وَأَمْسَى الْمُلْكُ لِلَّهِ، وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ

Amsayna wa amsal-mulku lillah, walhamdu lillah, la ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah.

We have entered the evening and the whole kingdom belongs to Allah. All praise is for Allah. None has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone, without any partner.

Alhamdu lillahil-ladhi at'amani hadha wa razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwah.

Praise is to Allah Who has given me this food and sustained me with it though I was unable to do it and powerless.

بِاسْمِكَ اللَّهُمَّ أَمُوتُ وَأَحْيَا

Bismika Allahumma amutu wa ahya.

In Your name O Allah, I die and I live.

Upon waking

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ

Alhamdu lillahil-ladhi ahyana ba'da ma amatana wa ilayhin-nushur.

Praise is to Allah Who gives us life after He has caused us to die and to Him is the return.

Dua for travel

Travel

سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ وَإِنَّا إِلَى رَبِّنَا لَمُنْقَلِبُونَ

Subhanal-ladhi sakhkhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin, wa inna ila Rabbina la munqalibun.

Glory to Him Who has subjected this to us, and we could never have it (by our own skill), and to our Lord we are surely returning.

Quran 43:13-14

Dua of distress

لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ الْعَظِيمُ الْحَلِيمُ، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ رَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ رَبُّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَرَبُّ الْأَرْضِ وَرَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْكَرِيمِ

La ilaha illallahul-'Adhimul-Halim, la ilaha illallahu Rabbul-'Arshil-'Adhim, la ilaha illallahu Rabbus-samawati wa Rabbul-ardi wa Rabbul-'Arshil-Karim.

None has the right to be worshipped but Allah the Mighty, the Forbearing. None has the right to be worshipped but Allah, Lord of the Magnificent Throne. None has the right to be worshipped but Allah, Lord of the heavens, Lord of the earth, and Lord of the Honourable Throne.

Dua for anxiety and sorrow

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْهَمِّ وَالْحَزَنِ، وَالْعَجْزِ وَالْكَسَلِ، وَالْبُخْلِ وَالْجُبْنِ، وَضَلَعِ الدَّيْنِ وَغَلَبَةِ الرِّجَالِ

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-hammi wal-hazan, wal-'ajzi wal-kasal, wal-bukhli wal-jubn, wa dala'id-dayni wa ghalabatir-rijal.

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, weakness and laziness, stinginess and cowardice, the burden of debt and the domination of men.

Seeking forgiveness

Forgiveness

أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ الَّذِي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّومُ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ

Astaghfirullahal-ladhi la ilaha illa Huwal-Hayyul-Qayyumu wa atubu ilayh.

I seek forgiveness from Allah, there is no god but Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer, and I turn to Him in repentance.

سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَبِحَمْدِهِ

Subhanallahi wa bihamdih.

Glory be to Allah and praise Him.

The three Quls (morning & evening protection)

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الَّذِي لَا يَضُرُّ مَعَ اسْمِهِ شَيْءٌ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَا فِي السَّمَاءِ وَهُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ

Bismillahil-ladhi la yadurru ma'asmihi shay'un fil-ardi wa la fis-sama'i wa Huwas-Sami'ul-'Alim.

In the name of Allah with whose name nothing on earth or in the heaven can cause harm. He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing. (Recite three times morning and evening)

Morning dhikr (100 times)

سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَبِحَمْدِهِ

Subhanallahi wa bihamdih.

Glory be to Allah and praise Him. (Recite 100 times in the morning — your sins will be forgiven even if they are like the foam of the sea.)

Entering the home

Daily Life

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ خَيْرَ الْمَوْلِجِ وَخَيْرَ الْمَخْرَجِ، بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَلَجْنَا وَبِسْمِ اللَّهِ خَرَجْنَا وَعَلَى اللَّهِ رَبِّنَا تَوَكَّلْنَا

Allahumma inni as'aluka khayral-mawliji wa khayral-makhraji. Bismillahi walajna wa bismillahi kharajna wa 'alallahi Rabbina tawakkalna.

O Allah, I ask You for the best of entering and the best of leaving. In the name of Allah we enter, in the name of Allah we leave, and upon our Lord we rely.

Daily Life

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللَّهِ وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ

Bismillahi tawakkaltu 'alallah, wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah.

In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, and there is no might or power except with Allah.

Sunan Abu Dawud 5095, Tirmidhi 3426

Entering the bathroom

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْخُبُثِ وَالْخَبَائِثِ

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-khubuthi wal-khaba'ith.

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the male and female devils.

After completing wudu

Daily Life

أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ

Ashhadu an la ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasuluh.

I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone, without partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and messenger. (Then say: 'O Allah, make me among those who constantly repent and purify themselves.')

When wearing a garment

Daily Life

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي كَسَانِي هَذَا وَرَزَقَنِيهِ مِنْ غَيْرِ حَوْلٍ مِنِّي وَلَا قُوَّةٍ

Alhamdu lillahil-ladhi kasani hadha wa razaqanihi min ghayri hawlin minni wa la quwwah.

Praise is to Allah Who has clothed me with this garment and sustained me with it, though I was unable to do it by myself.

After the adhan

Daily Life

اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ هَذِهِ الدَّعْوَةِ التَّامَّةِ وَالصَّلَاةِ الْقَائِمَةِ آتِ مُحَمَّدًا الْوَسِيلَةَ وَالْفَضِيلَةَ وَابْعَثْهُ مَقَامًا مَحْمُودًا الَّذِي وَعَدْتَهُ

Allahumma Rabba hadhihi'd-da'wati't-tammah was-salati'l-qaimah, at Muhammadan al-wasilata wal-fadilah wab'athhu maqaman mahmudanil-ladhi wa'adtah.

O Allah, Lord of this perfect call and established prayer, grant Muhammad the intercession and favour, and raise him to the praised station You have promised him.

Sahih al-Bukhari 614

Dhikr after every prayer (33 times)

Daily Life

سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ، وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ، وَاللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ

Subhanallah (33x), walhamdulillah (33x), wallahu Akbar (33x). Then: La ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu wa Huwa 'ala kulli shay'in Qadir.

Glory be to Allah (33 times), praise be to Allah (33 times), Allah is the Greatest (33 times). Then complete with: None has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone, without partner. His is the dominion and the praise, and He is able to do all things.

Salat al-Istikhara (guidance prayer)

Distress & Hardship

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْتَخِيرُكَ بِعِلْمِكَ وَأَسْتَقْدِرُكَ بِقُدْرَتِكَ وَأَسْأَلُكَ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ الْعَظِيمِ

Allahumma inni astakhiruka bi'ilmika wa astaqdiruka biqudratika wa as'aluka min fadlikal-'Adhim.

O Allah, I seek Your guidance by Your knowledge, I seek ability by Your power, and I ask You of Your great bounty. You are able, I am not; You know, I do not.

Sahih al-Bukhari 1166

Dua of Yunus (for distress)

لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّي كُنْتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ

La ilaha illa anta subhanaka inni kuntu minaz-zalimin.

There is no god but You, Glory to You. Surely I was of the wrongdoers. (No Muslim supplicates with this except Allah responds.)

Quran 21:87 — Sahih al-Bukhari 6334

Protection of children

أُعِيذُكُمَا بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّةِ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْطَانٍ وَهَامَّةٍ وَمِنْ كُلِّ عَيْنٍ لَامَّةٍ

U'idhukuma bikalimatillahi't-tammah min kulli shaytanin wa hammah wa min kulli 'aynin lammah.

I seek refuge for you both in the perfect words of Allah, from every devil, every poisonous creature, and every evil eye.

When visiting the sick

Distress & Hardship

اللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ النَّاسِ أَذْهِبِ الْبَأْسَ وَاشْفِ أَنْتَ الشَّافِي لَا شِفَاءَ إِلَّا شِفَاؤُكَ شِفَاءً لَا يُغَادِرُ سَقَمًا

Allahumma Rabban-nas adhhibil-ba'sa washfi antash-Shafi la shifa'a illa shifa'uka shifa'an la yughadiru saqama.

O Allah, Lord of mankind, remove the harm and cure — You are the Healer. There is no cure but Yours, a cure that leaves no trace of illness.

Sahih al-Bukhari 5743, Sahih Muslim 2191

When breaking the fast

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي لَكَ صُمْتُ وَبِكَ آمَنْتُ وَعَلَى رِزْقِكَ أَفْطَرْتُ

Allahumma inni laka sumtu wa bika amantu wa 'ala rizqika aftartu.

O Allah, I fasted for You, believed in You, and broke my fast on Your provision.

Sunan Abu Dawud 2358

After drinking milk

اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيهِ وَزِدْنَا مِنْهُ

Allahumma barik lana fihi wa zidna minhu.

O Allah, bless it for us and give us more of it.

Before sleeping (full protection)

Sleeping & Waking

اللَّهُمَّ بِاسْمِكَ أَمُوتُ وَأَحْيَا، وَبِاسْمِكَ أَرْفَعُ جَنْبِي، اللَّهُمَّ احْفَظْنِي مِنْ شَرِّ كُلِّ شَيْطَانٍ

Allahumma bismika amutu wa ahya. (Recite Ayat al-Kursi, the last two verses of Surah al-Baqarah, and the three Quls — then sleep.)

O Allah, in Your name I die and I live. (The Prophet ﷺ would recite Ayat al-Kursi and the three Quls, blow into his hands, and wipe his body before sleeping.)

Night dhikr before sleep

سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ وَبِحَمْدِهِ مِائَةَ مَرَّةٍ

Subhanallahi wa bihamdih (100 times).

Glory be to Allah and praise Him (100 times). Whoever says this before sleeping will have his sins forgiven, even if they are like the foam of the sea.

When boarding a vehicle

Travel

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ وَإِنَّا إِلَى رَبِّنَا لَمُنْقَلِبُونَ

Alhamdu lillahil-ladhi sakhkhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin wa inna ila Rabbina la munqalibun.

Praise be to Allah Who has subjected this to us, and we could never have it by our own efforts. And to our Lord we are surely returning.

اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيمَا رَزَقْتَنَا

Allahumma barik lana fima razaqtana.

O Allah, bless for us what You have provided us.

When rain falls

اللَّهُمَّ صَيِّبًا نَافِعًا

Allahumma sayyiban nafi'an.

O Allah, (make it) a beneficial rain.

مُطِرْنَا بِفَضْلِ اللَّهِ وَرَحْمَتِهِ

Mutirna bifadlillahi wa rahmatih.

We have been given rain by the favour and mercy of Allah.

Upon hearing thunder

سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي يُسَبِّحُ الرَّعْدُ بِحَمْدِهِ وَالْمَلَائِكَةُ مِنْ خِيفَتِهِ

Subhanal-ladhi yusabbihur-ra'du bihamdihi wal-mala'ikatu min khifatih.

Glory to Him by Whose praise the thunder exalts Him, and the angels too, in awe of Him.

Dua for fear and consciousness of Allah

Forgiveness

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ زَوَالِ نِعْمَتِكَ وَتَحَوُّلِ عَافِيَتِكَ وَفُجَاءَةِ نِقْمَتِكَ وَجَمِيعِ سَخَطِكَ

Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min zawali ni'matika wa tahawwuli 'afiyatika wa fuja'ati niqmatika wa jami'i sakhatik.

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the fading of Your blessing, the passing of Your wellness, the suddenness of Your punishment, and all aspects of Your wrath.
